Each year, since 1996, SRP provides a great mower recycling service for existing customers. This year, collections were scheduled - BUT HAVE SINCE BEEN CANCELLED UNTIL 2010, at the SRP PERA Club, 1 East Continental Drive, Tempe, Arizona.
I received a call from SRP today telling me that this event has been cancelled. But, watch for next year's event to trade in your gas or old electric mowers and receive rebates
toward the purchase of new electric models.
This recycling program has continued to bring down pollution in our valley. In 2008, more than 1,300 customers traded in their gas-powered mowers eliminating 32 tons of pollution from the Valley’s
air. According to the calc
ulations by SRP and Maricopa County, this would be equivalent to reducing 55,886 miles of driving per week.

Teri, what a neat service to reduce pollution and to help ease the dependence on oil. I would have never guessed that 1,300 mowers would generate that much pollution.
Teri--Sounds like a great GREEN program for Phoenix residents to participate in! Good information!
David, I think it's pretty cool and useful too. I was amazed at how much pollution they emit. ;-)
Teri, absolutely a GREEN program. Our valley provides these great services, and I wanted to make sure the word gets out. ;-)
I would have never thought that a few mowers would make a difference. Thanks for the post.
Terry, I, too, was surprised. That's one reason I wanted to share the info. ;-)
What a great service to provide! We often have electronics and hazardous material recycling, but I never heard of mower recycling!
I read somewhere that there is part of the Stimulus plan that gives a credit to home owners who buy energy efficient appliances this year as well. Guess I wasn't paying much attention because I bought all of mine last year, so it doesn't apply to me. There is a green movement in Sacramento for people to stop mowing with gas-powered mowers, though.
Carol, they offer great services, and I'll be sharing more. This one, however, has just been cancelled. ;-)
Elizabeth, I'm sure we do that or have done that - we, meaning, SRP! ;-)
Hi Teri,
I should take a picture of my husband using our manual reel mower and post it my green blog. Talk about zero emissions & a workout to boot!!! We have been using one for years - of course it is harder to use the taller the grass grows. Here in Phoenix, our grass does not get too thick or tall, so it is feasible. Still, it is a great workout.

Ann, I think you should. ;-)
