A new voting concept in Phoenix, Arizona! Wow, that sounds like a great idea. Although we typically mail in our ballots, I do like some of the ideas proposed giving
voters more days and more voting sites to cast their votes.
Some of those Benefits would include:
1 - Voters could cast ballots at any voting center convenient to the
ir home, work or activities.
2 - The voting centers would be open for several days, such as the Saturday and Monday before a Tuesday election - thereby allowing more opportunities for voters to participate.
3 - The total number of facilities and workers needed would be reduced, freeing up the best facilities and using the most knowledgeable and skilled workers.
4 - This plan would reduce the number of polling places from 128 - and election costs by an estimated $250,000 addressing the fact that an overwhelming number of Phoenix residents vote early by mail. In the City's last election in May, 96% of votes cast were by mail. Since 2001, city elections have received 80 percent of all ballots cast via mail.

Teri, I think in my town it might just be the reverse. Most people go to polling booths. But I love being able to mail mine in...
Teri, this seems like a great idea. Savings and convenience, it would be interesting to see the effect on turnout.
Hey Teri ~ I think mail-in voting is the best thing since sliced bread! But I also like the idea of voting centers. Whatever it takes to get folks to VOTE, I'm in favor of! :)
Hi Teri,
Makes sense to me. During the last election (to my surprise) when I realized I would be out of town on election day I discovered I could vote a week early at a local mall of all places. I had no idea that this even existed.
I like the concept of voting centers where you can cast your ballot. However, unless you use touch screen voting, I don't know how you would track the correct ballots for all the local/municipal races, subdistricts (e.g. junior colleges, park districts, sewer districts, school districts), etc. Also, I don't like the idea of holding votes open for a period of days. I am curious what the need or justification is for this ... especially when you can vote via mail or absentee ballot prior to the election date and when, at least in Missouri, you get paid time off to go vote. Plus, I look at voting as an obligation of the citizen and don't quite see the need to dumb down the process because someone is too lazy either to get an absentee ballot or show up at the polls on election day.
Teri: I LIKE this plan... wish we had something like this HERE!!! AZ has a lot of things and does a lot of things I LIKE better than CA. I get irriated with my state on so many levels!
Teri--Early voting is being discussed, along with many other ideas, to make voting simpler in Minnesota as well. We are STILL waiting for finalized results in our US senate election from last November.
Teri - any way we can make it easier for folks to vote, encourage more TO vote, and do so by saving money makes sense. Now I would prefer to vote on-line myself.
Jeff
Lori, so do I! Mailing in my ballot is so easy. Waiting in last minute lines isn't for me. ;-)
David, I suspect more and more WILL mail in their ballots...I, like Jeff, wouldn't mind via the internet. ;-)
Randy, ditto....;-)
Lynda, they haven't started that here yet, but mailing my ballot up to a month early does help. ;-)
Ryan, obligation for sure. Convenience, however, helps motivate those would wouldn't otherwise get out and look for their precincts, is a huge help. Also, saving money sounds good to me. ;-)
Kat, me too....Arizona does have a lot of things California - like lack of congestion (at least comparied to California) and so far no earthquakes. ;-)
Teri, early voting - even with a mail in ballot is the way to go for us. ;-)
Jeff, what a great idea...voting on line - I'm going for that one. ;-)
Hi Teri - In Ohio most people still go to polling booths to cast their ballots. However, we did see a sharp increase in absentee ballots this year due to changes in the laws. I think most people hold a preference to mailing in their ballots. Personally, I would love to see online voting provided the security bugs and other issues could be cleared up. Until then, however, I will continue to march out to my local polling booth and cast my ballot.
Teri, What a cost savings! $250,000 could go really far. I am not a Phx resident but I vote Yes! I wish florida and some of the other states where the ballots are always miscounted would get their act together!
Jon, I absolutely LOVE the absentee ballot option...Online? Okay, I'm all over that one if they come up with a way for that option. ;-)
Sandy, yep...saves BIG money. We don't think about that stuff until it's spelled out. Yes, I would suggest Florida come up with SOMETHING that works better. ;-)
Teri, I subscribe to whatever it takes to get more people to vote as long as it's legitimate, Karen
I wish we would do something like that here. We have been doing vote by mail only for I think the last 5 years and it has been proven time and time again that there is a lot of voter fraud. Amazing how many dead people are so passionate about a certain candidate.
I have just recieved my citizenship so i went to the poling booth fro the General election, i will be voting by mail going forward, its much easier.
Karen, I agree....especially online, huh? ;-)
Todd, voter fraud? Hmmmmm...it has a familiar ring to it. I understand Oregon is quite a "liberal" state? ;-)
Andrew, well congratulations - glad to have another upstanding citizen aboard. ;-)
