As I shared with everyone in my last post, my husband and I traveled north and east of Mesa, Arizona - about four hours to the spectacular Petrified National Forest Park with pristine views and vibrant colors. I shot so many pictures that I had to break this post into three portions....only giving you a teaser view of this amazing place.
After my pictures of our little "deer" friend, and leaving the Blue Mesa, we stopped at Puerco Pueblo. This was the site of a partially stabilized 100-room pueblo built about 1250 housing nearly 1200 people. We walked the short paved trail through the site which offered wayside exhibits and view of petroglyphs. I caught a photo of some petroglyphs, which are drawings in the rocks.
Great drawing above of the ruins which you will follow:
Doesn't this look like the remnants of a basement?
Check out the petroglyphs carved into the stone .....above and below:
These crumbling buildings are amazing. Just to stand there and imagine that a thriving community once lived there myriad years ago, is humbling.
This last picture is the Puerco River Bridge with a train traveling by on the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway. Just north we cross over Route 66 and enter into the Painted Desert - hold on for those pictures. Unbelievable!
I hope you enjoy your trip through the Petried Forest National Park in Northern Arizona - yet ANOTHER reason to relocate to Mesa, Arizona.
