I've been getting in touch with my homemaker side and sometime in January, I decided to begin baking bread again. There was a time when raising my children that I made it for an entire year. Did not buy one loaf of bread. Though I've continued from time to time to bake white bread and rolls during the holidays, I've decided that we need to eat healthier. I LOVE bread, but not the store-bought kind.
Since we store wheat, I decided to break in our wheat grinder, (as yet still in the original box) grind enough for one batch, and I proceeded to make this yummy 100% whole wheat bread. (Pictured on the left).
Soon I was giving it to our friends, and then trying out white wheat vs. red wheat vs. hard wheat. The batch on the left is regular wheat.
This bread has a very high fiber content - up to 33% compared to maybe 3% in the markets. It is suggested when introducing it into our diet to do so gradually. You will notice a difference.
So far, I've tried the white wheat and the regular wheat. We have decided we like the little heavier texture of the regular, hard wheat without too much gluten. I will be trying a new recipe adding sesame seeds and other grains in the next batch. I'll let you know how it turned out. My brother even came over for a lesson. It seems he remembers growing up with that smell of fresh baked bread in the house. Since I'm the oldest, and he is number 6, he didn't know I made bread. He took a couple of loaves home with him. Here is the finished product cooling on my counter.
If any of you would like the recipe, just let me know. I'll even show you how if you live close by and have a desire to learn. I use a Bosch mixer which I've had for 30+ years, and they still sell it believe it or not.
